ENGINEERING FIRM WINS £100K IN RESEARCH FUNDING

A Co. Down engineering firm with its roots in shipbuilding has secured nearly £100,000 to fund its aerospace research.

CCP Gransden in Newtownards now specialises in composite technologies and thermoplastics following its ship-repairing past.

It has won the funding from the national aerospace technology exploitation programme (NATEP) through Invest NI’s support for research and development.

And its research project will focus on how thermoplastics can make manufacturing easier because they are lighter in weight.

Jim Erskine, managing director of CCP Gransden said “We went through a very rigorous process in order to secure the funding, which included involvement by major aerospace companies in the UK, all of whom strongly back the NATEP scheme.”

“We are indebted to Invest NI, the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering Centre (NIACE), Bombardier and other local aerospace companies for their assistance and support.  We’re all  looking forward to getting the project under way.”

CCP Gransden dates back to 1894 and the heyday of the shipping industry in Northern Ireland.

The business was forced to diversify after the Second World War and branched out into engineering for sectors like quarrying, textiles and manufacturing.

It moved into early composites in the 1950s and had a client list including Michelin, Enkalon and ICI Courtaulds.
